Last October, the Rotary Club of Washington, D.C., gave our class student dictionaries. Each student received his or her own dictionary. This was great because before we got them we had to share dictionaries. Now, each morning we use our dictionaries duing `Dictionary Question of the Day` time.
Every week we have a student quizzer who has to work with our teacher the day before to decide the next day`s question or questions. The next morning, our teacher puts the questions on the board, and we all get our dictionaries. Usually we have more than one question. To be honest, I had not expected such a reaction to the news that every third-grader at Birney Elementary School in Southeast Washington was about to get his or her very own dictionary.
A dictionary ? That inert and antiquated repository of words?
And yet, the class erupted in cheers when Principal Charles Webb made the announcement yesterday. Possibly it was his carnival barker build-up.
`How many of you like to read books?` he asked the students in Mr. Bailey `s class.
Hands shot up.
`How many of you like to have your own books?`
