On Wednesday, third graders at Silver Lake Elementary watched eagerly as volunteers from the Middletown-Odessa Rotary unpacked case after case of dictionaries to give to waiting students. It was the eighth year the Rotary has participated in The Dictionary Project, a nonprofit initiative that strives to make sure every young child has access to this important reference tool so they can become an active reader, good writer and creative thinker. The Delaware Youth Center in Callicoon, NY was able to continue their Dictionary Project this year, in spite of the facility being destroyed by June floods. This is the fifth year the Center has distributed dictionaries to all the third graders of Sullivan West. Pictured is Mrs. Tampone`s class, who are all delighted with their gift. Center President Tess McBeath encourages the children to persevere if they can`t find a word - after she has them look the word up in their new dictionaries. Christiana Club Rotarians distribute over 528 English Dictionaries, 60 Spanish/English Dictionaries and 24 World Atlases to 3rd graders at Thurgood Marshall, Downes, Gallaher and Jones Elementary Schools in Newark Delaware as well as the Wilmington Nativity Prep School and the Boys and Girls Club of Bear. Ten Rotarians donated over 35 hours of their time to help organize, affix stickers for students names, and distribute the dictionaries. The Rotary Clubs of Kent Island and Centreville joined in a literacy project aimed at helping local third graders. They distributed new paperback dictionaries Webster`s Dictionary New Encyclopedic Edition to a total of 296 third-graders at Bayside and Grasonville Elementary Schools. Their efforts are part of a nationwide project which aims to provide every child in the United States with a dictionary as they enter the third grade.

Nanticoke Seaford Rotary partnered recently with Woodbridge Seaford and Laurel school districts to distribute 744 dictionaries to third-graders in six elementary schools. According to Rotary President Joe Gast (Left), the project insures that each third-grade student is better equipped to learn new words and improve reading skills.

In an effort to increase literacy throughout the Middletown-Odessa-Townsend area, the Rotary Club of Middletown-Odessa recently contributed 450 dictionaries to the Appoquinimink School District for distribution to all third-graders. Working with The Dictionary Project, which is based in Charleston, SC, Rotary District 7630 has recommended the project for the State of Delaware and Maryland`s Eastern Shore.
