This is the ideal picture. Kids enjoying books, reading on their own.
But outside of school, it is simply not the case for everyone.
`A lot of the boys and girls have no access to books at home,` said Gini Molhem, principal of Allen Park Elementary.
School books are school property, and often they are left at school.
Now, with the help of the Lee County Rotary Club, the school district is trying to make books more accessible.
`Citizens giving kids things that will help them in the future,` said Dr. James Browder, Lee County Scho... Click to read full story ...

As a kid, I`d ask my mother what a word meant or how to spell it. Her succinct response was: `Look it up.` Inevitably, my dictionary search would lead me to the discovery of more new words. I grew to love the dictionary. One of my favorite high school graduation gifts, second only to the cedar chest from my parents, was a thick dictionary. On Aug. 15, 550 fifth-graders at seven elementary schools in Canal Point, Pahokee, Belle Glade and South Bay received a dictionary of his or her own, thanks to the Flagler Sunrise chapter of Kiwanis International. It`s difficult to decide who`s more welcoming at Northeast Mortgage — Linda Keutmann or her 5-year-old Yorkshire terrier, Brittany.
Brittany lounges on a pillow on her owner`s desk while Keutmann works. When the front door opens, she takes off, her wagging tail an invitation for visitors to rub her stomach.
Keutmann, the president of the corporation, welcomes guests with a more traditional greeting: a firm handshake and a smile.
`People don`t come to see me,` she says. `They come to see her.`
And Brittany — er, Keutmann — gets a lot of visitors, whether ... Click to read full story ...

`I am a third grade teacher at the St. Barnabas Episcopal Schoo. We are very proud of our history of excellence at this chool and are constantly looking for ways to improve the education of our studnets in order that they may be successful in every avenue of their futures.
Although we have a few dictionaries in our classroom, it was difficult when we wanted to work on dictionary skill,s as the children had to share. I wanted to get a dictionary for each child; however, the cost of that many was prohibitive for me. When I saw the article about you in an education journal, I was very excited and I immediately got in touch with you. I w... Click to read full story ...

Carolynn flipped open her brand-spanking-new dictionary to the word `calamity.` Ten seconds later she knew what it meant: a disastrous event.
`I like it,` she said, eyeballing the book.
The third-grader then smiled and glanced in the direction of some tall adults who had just walked out of Sunshine Elementary School in Lehigh Acres. There are no calamities here, her expression seemed to say.
The adults, representing the Rotary Club and Lee County schools, had come bearing gifts. Each third-grader, about 220 of them in Sunshine alone, was getting a dictionary, thanks to the Ro... It is amazing how sometimes a small act of kindness, a good deed by a single person, can grow and evolve and end up benefiting millions of people. In this case, over a million children throughout the United States have become beneficiaries of a program began in earnest several years ago. In 1997, Mary French began donating dictionaries to low income students in her hometown of Charleston, South Carolina. That first year she donated 150 dictionaries. Soon, Rotary clubs in her area became involved in Mary`s project and the program began to grow and spread like wildfire. In fact, last year, Rotary clubs nationwide donated ov...
