The Rotary Club of Madison County has an extensive Literacy Program. Members volunteer to help students who are struggling with reading. The Club received a grant from the Jackson EMC Foundation which they use to fund a program which sends an age-appropriate book each month to every Madison County child registered for the program from birth to age five. They have also used the grant money to fund The Dictionary Project in their county.

350 Stephens County third graders are learning what the longest word is--and it is too difficult to say on the radio.
That is one of the bits of information found in student dictionaries handed out by the Stephens Education Literacy Foundation this week.
Director Lisa Prickett said the dictionaries are a tool students can use for their entire academic careers.
`We have found that in third grade, they really begin to need resource materials and they start writing reports, and it is important that they have a tool they can use either in their classrooms or at home that will help them with this,` said Prickett.

A major project of the Elks throughout the United States is to give each child in the third grade their own personal dictionary. This goal has been reached by the Eatonton Elks Lodge #2549 each of the past four years--until this year. Ravi H., a third grader at Putnam Elementary, did not receive one in November when her other classmates did. Ravi is a mainstreamed, bright little girl who is blind.

Volunteers began distributing the 1,057 English and 85 Spanish — English dictionaries Monday at Bramlett Elementary School in Auburn. Business, civic and school groups raised funds to buy the dictionaries, which cost $1.25 to $2 apiece, depending on the amount purchased. In Barrow County schools, dictionary skills are introduced in the third grade, and delivery was timed to coincide with the curriculum. For the third year in a row, the Stephens Education Literacy Foundation has brought the Dictionary Project to third grade students in Stephens County. Each student receives a copy of A Student`s Dictionary to use in the classroom during this year and then take home for use in the future.
When presented with the books, Lisa Prickett, executive director of the Stephens Education Literacy Foundation, talks to the students about the importance of graduation. The second annual `Third Grade Dictionary Project` was completed recently. The goal of the program is to assist all students in completing the school year as good writers, active readers and creative thinkers by providing students with their own personal dictionary.

On Sept. 23, Demorest Elementary became the final school to receive dictionaries from Volunteers for Literacy, according to the program`s director, Teri Lewis. `This school will be receiving about 75 dictionaries,` Lewis said of Demorest Elementary, before unsuspecting students arrived in the school cafeteria to pick up their gifts. `We have distributed more than 500 to all third graders who are educated in public schools within the county.`

In celebration of International Literacy Day in September,
Peachtree City, Georgia Rotarians delivered dictionaries to each of the third graders at their adopted `Partner in Education` school, Peachtree City Elementary School. Volunteers visited the five classrooms at that grade level on September 28 th and presented each student with their own dictionary to keep. Each book had a Rotary sticker in the inside cover printed with the Four Way Test and a line for the student to write his/her name to personalize the book.
