Dear Hawaii Rotarians,
In October, my third grade granddaughter came home from school saying excitedly, `Mom! Guess what? My classmates and I each got a neat Dictionary today!` (from the Rotary Club of Kahala Sunrise).
Upon further inquiry, I discovered that the Rotary District Chairperson, Gloria King, from the Rotary Clubs of Honolulu and most recently of the Rotary Club of Kahala Sunrise, learned about this project from the mainland and started it here in Hawaii in 2005.
I understand from District Chair Gloria, that the Rotary Dictionary project was so satisfying and successfu... Click to read full story ...

A Message from Pearlridge Rotary Club President Roy Matsuo:
Aloha,
Rotary International and our Hawaii District 5000 have asked individual Clubs to promote Rotary...our Pearlridge Club has rarely promoted our involvement in Community Service, believing that the `word` of our many great community service projects will somehow get around? And especially for our Hawaii Rotary District 5000`s Dictionary Project, which we are heavily involved in and have been for many years.
Our Club is grateful to be involved in the community with this terrific `feel good` project that basically falls under our Youth Service and Literacy... Click to read full story ... | | Momilani Elementary School 3rd Graders/ Photo By: Barry Villamil |

Greeted by purple orchid leis, members of The Rotary Club of Kauai returned today to Wilcox Elementary School to present each of the third graders with their own dictionaries. Each of the classes, taught by Janice Smith, Caroline Freudig, Megan Nii, Ann Keeler, Cynthia Swain and Irene Isonaga were filled with eager, disciplined students. Many of the students already knew about the annual dictionary give-away as their older brothers and sisters had received their copy in prior years. Upon receiving their dictionary, each of the students printed their name and home room number inside the front cover. Then, with the assistance of the teacher... LIHU`E — SAT tests may have delayed Wilcox Elementary School`s celebration of National Library Week, but on Wednesday the students were treated to a morning of stories by local celebrities as part of their `Stories from the Heart` program.
Kaua`i-raised Alicia Michioka, Miss Hawai`i 2003, made a trip to Kaua`i from her O`ahu home so she could join about two dozen community leaders and volunteers in reading to the students. `We got help from Aunty Cheryl (Michioka),` Lani Gokan, Wilcox School librarian said. `Cheryl got us her phone number, and lined up the trip, so she could make it here.`
And, once on campus, Michioka wa... Click to read full story ...

KAPA`A — Not too many dictionaries contain the word and definition for `ohana,` but after that word was popularized by the Lilo and Stitch movie and series on the Disney Channel, it is now found in a version of dictionaries presented free of charge to third-grade students at Kapa`a Elementary School recently. For many of the students, this is their first dictionary, and along with personalizing this learning tool further, they each also received their own `dictionary pen,` a red ball-point pen to help measure their progress with this new learning tool. Students are encouraged to mark with a red dot in the book`s marg... Click to read full story ...
