Rotary International and our Hawaii District 5000 have asked individual Clubs to promote Rotary...our Pearlridge Club has rarely promoted our involvement in Community Service, believing that the `word` of our many great community service projects will somehow get around? And especially for our Hawaii Rotary District 5000`s Dictionary Project, which we are heavily involved in and have been for many years.

Our Club is grateful to be involved in the community with this terrific `feel good` project that basically falls under our Youth Service and Literacy...

Rotarians present dictionaries to 3rd-graders across Maui

Maui Rotarians have spent this fall distributing 2,600 dictionaries to 3rd-graders in both public and private schools across the island.
The dictionary project is a community-service project sponsored by the nine Maui Rotary Clubs: Kahului, Kihei Sunrise, Kihei-Wailea, Lahaina, Lahaina-Sunrise, Maui, Valley Isle Sunset, Upcountry and Wailuku.

Rotarians believe literacy is one of the most important skills a child can obtain, a news release said.

The goal of the local dictionary project is to help students become good writers, active readers and creative thinkers.

Greeted by purple orchid leis, members of The Rotary Club of Kauai returned today to Wilcox Elementary School to present each of the third graders with their own dictionaries. Each of the classes, taught by Janice Smith, Caroline Freudig, Megan Nii, Ann Keeler, Cynthia Swain and Irene Isonaga were filled with eager, disciplined students. Many of the students already knew about the annual dictionary give-away as their older brothers and sisters had received their copy in prior years. The Kailua Elks Lodge No. 2230 presented dictionaries to all the 3rd Graders at Kainalu Elementary and Aikahi Elementary School. Distributing the dictionaries were Dictionary Project Chairman Lehua Weatherwax, Past District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler John Brown, Past Exalted Ruler Gregory Sylvester and Exalted Ruler John Nagy.

Members of the Rotary Club of Hilo Bay recently handed out 144 dictionaries to five
third-grade classes at Waiakea Elementary School , 132 dictionaries to four third-grade classes at Waiakeawaena Elementary School , and 76 dictionaries to four third-grade classes at Hilo Union Elementary School . In support of Rotary International`s goal of universal literacy, each of the 41 clubs in Hawaii was asked this year to adopt a school and distribute special dictionaries to all Grade 3 students through donations from individuals or local businesses.
