The four Pocatello, Idaho Rotary clubs: Pocatello Rotary Club, Gate City Rotary Club, Centennial Rotary Club and Portneuf Rotary Club combined efforts to do the `Dictionary Project.` The project entailed personally handing and giving a dictionary to every public and private third grade student in the Pocatello/Chubbuck area. All new third grade teachers received a dictionary as well. In total over 70 Rotarians distributed and personally gave 1,125 students their own dictionary. The Eagle-Garden City Rotary Club distributed a dictionary to every third grader in Star, Eagle, and Garden City during the month of November.
This program was made possible by grants from Mountain West Bank and Rotary District 5400 that covers southern Idaho. In all, the Rotarians distributed over 700 dictionaries to students in the eleven tri-cities area public, charter, and private schools.
The program began last year with the Rotary Club adding a community youth program. Now in its fifth year in Kuna, The Dictionary Project is distributing over 400 student dictionaries to every third-grader in Kuna. Sponsors were distributing the dictionaries at Kuna school district schools on Tuesday, Dec. 15, and will present them to students at Falcon Ridge Charter School soon. The sponsors who made possible the donation of the free dictionaries to every third-grader in Kuna are: Kuna Grange #59, Kuna Kiwanis Club, the Kuna Melba News, Brenda Blitman, Kuna Mayor Scott Dowdy, Kuna City Council member and local insurance agent Rich Cardoza, Highland-Star Grange and Rob Morris #63 Order of the Eastern Star.

Blackfoot Rotary members have been visiting local schools this week distributing personal dictionaries to third graders. It is all part of The Dictionary Project, which encourages the nation`s youth to practice good reading and spelling habits and gives them the tools to do it. Three hundred students at local schools are proud owners of new dictionaries thanks to the Boise Southwest Rotary Club. Recently, members of the Rotary Club gave away more than 300 dictionaries to third grade students at Hawthorne, Grace Jordan and Morley Nelson, Lowell and Sacred Heart elementary schools and special education students at West Junior High School. The books were specifically produced for students at the third grade level, when dictionary skills are typically introduced. Students are encouraged to use the books at school or take them home.

Our Elks Lodge #1254 has participated in the Dictionary Project for three years. There are three school districts in Coeur d`Alene: Lakeland with about 370 third graders, Coeur d`Alene School District with 775 third graders, and Post Falls School District with 425 third graders. Schools in these districts have received dictionaries all three years. All dictionaries have presentation labels with the students` names which indicate that the books were a gift from Coeur d`Alene Lodge 1254. Enclosed is a report on the recent Dictionary Project undertaken by the Caldwell, Idaho Rotary Club. We distributed 452 dictionaries and 20 thesauruses to five schools.
We feel that the effort and expense was more than worth it. I was expecting a quiet, benign and polite response to our gifts. I was very pleasantly surprised in each of the schools by the excited and vocal response we received as the dictionaries were being passed out. Their response was genuine and the teachers were excited as well. I expect the dictionaries will be put to good use.

The Moscow Elks Lodge completed its second annual Dictionary Project in December by distributing dictionaries to third graders in Latah and Whitman counties.
Monday, December 10 volunteers from the lodge distributed dictionaries to every third grade class in Latah country. Wednesday, December 12, the volunteers visited classes in Whitman County.
In all 716 dictionaries were distributed in 33 public and private classrooms throughout the two counties.
