This month we celebrate the 248th anniversary of the birth of Noah Webster. Born on Oct. 16, 1758, Noah thought that the people of this new country could not thrive without a dictionary that reflected their words and ideas.
And now in 2006 we still believe this is true.
Last week, volunteers from all over the metropolitan area presented personal dictionaries to more than 25,000 third-graders in our community. Volunteers from the Chiefs Red-Coaters, from Sprint, from the area`s Optimist, Kiwanis and Rotary clubs, as well as dozens of individuals and companies, participated.

There is a budget deficit in the State of Missouri . That is a fancy way of saying there is just not enough money to go around. And just like in your house and mine, when there isn`t enough money something has to be cut. Unfortunately for the children in Missouri , there will be more funding cuts for schools.
Maybe none of us have a few million dollars lying around to help out with the education of our youth but there is something phenomenal you can do with just $150.

A tiny group of volunteers want to give a free dictionary to every third- grader in the Kansas City area- theirs to take home, write in and use. As their vocabularies grow, students will read better and therefore become stronger students in other subjects, organizers say. That they just need to have a dictionary handy is a simple idea and one that volunteers across America are adopting. Mary French, a South Carolina woman, founded a nonprofit group that buys dictionaries for every third- grader in that state. She has inspired similar programs in more than 40 states.
