DOVER — Forty-five third grade students at Portsmouth Christian Academy
went home with a special gift recently – just four days before
Christmas. But this is one gift that will expand their knowledge for

The Hampton Grange presented every third-grader at Marston School last week with his or her own personal dictionary, which can be put it to good use now and for the rest of their lives.

Laura Eld, master of Oceanside Grange 260 in Hampton, joined rep­resentatives of her organization in presenting 136 students with a new dictionaries during an assembly at the school on Nov. 12.

The Grange has been distributing dictionaries at no cost to third-grad­ers since 2002, and to date has handed out over 1,040 books.

The Hussmans came on behalf of Harmony Grange # 99 in Sanbornton to give dictionaries to every student in the third grade as part of The Dictionary Project being held by granges throughout the state. On November 6th the Hudson Grange continued their Dictionary Project with the Hudson School District. (This is the 2nd year of a 5 year project.) Mr. Jerry Leclerc and Mr. Bob Haefner presented each third grade student with a dictionary to keep. The children were very excited about writing their names inside and receiving a dictionary of their own. The classroom teachers were equally excited to have their students get such a helpful reference book to use.

Third grade students at Gilford Elementary School now have a dictionary to call their own.

These dictionaries came through a joint program put on by Meredith Savings Bank and the New Hampshire State Grange.

As a part of the program, Meredith Savings Bank and the Grange provided third grade students with their own personal dictionaries with the hope of furthering their literary education.

`The neat thing about (the dictionaries) is they have a lot of other information in them,` said Principal Sandy McGonagle, who explained that this program is a huge benefit to her students.

Daniel Webster Grange members recently distributed dictionaries to the third-grade students of the Webster and Salisbury schools and will soon present dictionaries to the third-grade students at the Boscawen school. This project was started at a school that had many students from low-income families who couldn`t afford to purchase dictionaries for their children.

Miller Grange, in cooperation with Willard`s General Store, presented dictionaries to the third grade students at Temple Elementary School.  This is the first year Miller Grange has been involved with the project, joining several neigboring Granges to provide dictionaries to students in all schools within the Con-Val Regional, Monadnock Regional and Mascenic Regional School Districts.

Miller Grange, along with their neighboring Granges, participate in the project through The Dictionary Project NH, which presented 7,300 dictionaries to students throughout the state.

Third-grade students at Dunbarton Elementary School received a gift November 28. Rodney and Shelley Huntoon, representing Pineconia Grange of Concord, handed each student their own dictionary to keep with them throughout their academic careers.

`These don`t belong to the school--they belong to you,` Huntoon said as he urged students to write their names on a special label inside the front cover of their new dictionaries.

Odessa, one of the third-grade students receiving the dictionary, said it made her feel special. `I know I will be able to take it home at the end of the year and use it all summer,` she said with a big smi...

HAMPTON--Oceanside Grange member Laura Eld knows what time of year it is when the UPS driver arrives at her home with boxes in tow, proclaiming, `Dictionaries!`

It`s time to transport those boxes to Marston School, where third grade students will become the recipients of the brand new dictionaries contained therein.

HAMPTON — Ocean Side Grange, in conjunction with Granges throughout New Hampshire, has accomplished the first portion of a five-year program to donate dictionaries to every third grade student throughout the state.

According to Ocean Side Grange President Laura Eld, `It is the goal of Ocean Side Grange to see that, for the next four years, every third grader at the Marston School will have their own personal dictionary.`

To that end, members of the Hampton-based Grange fulfilled their commitment last week when they presented Webster`s Classic Reference Library paperback dictionaries to 160 Marston third graders.

BATH — Pine Grove Grange 298 will have a dictionary to use. Grange 298 of Bath has presented personal dictionaries at the Monroe Consolidated School . Ray Burton, Governor`s Council Member and Grafton County Commissioner, spoke for the Grange about the power of words and their proper use.

Pine Grove Grange 298 has added Monroe Consolidated School to the personal dictionaries to each third-grade students at the Lisbon and Bath schools in a previous ceremony. Representatives from the state Grange had several local chapters visit schools on Thursday to hand out the new dictionaries to each of the students.

That`s the catchphrase two elected city officials will be using to remind youngsters that dictionaries are a source of knowledge when they donate hundreds of reference books to local elementary schools later this month.

City Councilor Jason Hindle and his wife and School Board member Heather Orion Hindle are expected to visit the city`s three public elementary schools on Oct. 18 to present their donation. Each of these schools will receive as many third-grade dictionaries as the number of grade 3 children it has.
