Wednesday, March 03, 2010
Donor: North Las Vegas Elks Lodge # 2353 & The Dictionary Project

Last May Larry O`Laughlin received a call from Mary French, head of The Dictionary Project. She told Larry that approximately 21,000 third graders in Nevada did not receive a dictionary during the school year 2008-2009 and she would like to help by donating dictionaries to Nevada, if John and Tella Vore and Larry and Caroyle O`Laughlin would assist in this donation.

She furnished 8,016 dictionaries (free), and all the Vores and the O`Laughlins had to do was see that the dictionaries were given to third graders in schools not receiving dictionaries in 2008-2009.

The dictionaries were delivered to the Vores in Pahrump. The Vore...

One of Doug Drost`s first announcements Tuesday as the newly-inducted president of the Fallon Rotary International service organization, was to introduce members to this year`s theme, `Make Dreams Real.`

Drost, a financial advisor at Edwards Jones, has been a member of the local Rotary group since 2004. He lives in Fallon with his wife, Shawn, and children, Hunter, 8, and Sydney, 7.

The Dictionary Project here at the Pahrump Nevada schools went very well. There are four elementary schools and over 400 third-grade students. The teachers and students were so happy to get the dictionaries.

I came up short, but John Vore helped us out by adding some of his stock that he had on hand for the last school. He helped us so very much and was there for each school and did a great presentation to the students about the dictionary.

Thank you so much for your generous donation. All of the third-grade teachers were given your address so they could send thank you letters. I hope that they followed through.

We distributed approximately 600 dictionaries to third grade students at these schools:  Lincoln-Edison, Fredrick W. Watson, and Elizabeth Wilhelm, all in North Las Vegas.  The principals, teachers, and students were overjoyed.  We have received thank you notes and letters from all students.  We have already started receiving donations for next school year.  We plan to return to the same three schools next year, but if we have enough donations, we will take on another school.  Thank you for a great project.

Donor: Northwest Las Vegas Kiwanis Club

earlier this month, the Northwest Kiwanis Club handed out dictionaries to third graders at three el ementary schools, Eisenberg, Kahre and Park.

`By starting at the third- grade level, instead of just reading a book to them, we felt that the children are of an age where they could understand and become more literate,` said Ike Kaiser, project chair man. `It is our thought that literacy begins by not only knowing how to read, but by knowing the correct spelling and the use of words in their proper context.`

The first time the club donated books, in 2004, the local Kiwanis club gav...

A teacher`s dream in New Hampshire is touching thousands of lives in northern Nevada . Last month, the Sparks Rotarians got wind of Mary French`s passion for literacy and her nationwide push to give every third-grader a dictionary. It`s called The Dictionary Project.

Recently, Nevada became a part of it. The 105 members of the Sparks Rotary were able to deliver nearly 5,000 soft-sided, large-print dictionaries to every school in the Washoe district.

`It began when I heard about Project Dictionary and looked it up on the Internet,` said Mike Hix, president of the Sparks Rotary Club. `We decided we wanted to...

The Eureka Lions Club from Eureka, Nevada just completed distribution of 45 dictionaries to students at both ends of our county. We are a part of `rural` Nevada with a county population of only 1651 people.

Since this was our first year with the project, we opted to distribute dictionaries to the 3rd and 4th grade students at our two schools. The Eureka Lions Club is planning to issue a challenge to other Lions Clubs in Nevada to consider participating in this worthwhile project. We appreciate your work and are proud to be participants in the program.
