200 Highlands students recently received their own personal
dictionaries courtesy of the Highlands Area Rotary Club. The Rotary
Club, in conjunction with The Dictionary Project, donated to third
grade students at Fairmount, Fawn, Grandview and Heights elementary
schools. Rotary member Bob Sodini and the schools`
principals presented the dictionaries to the third graders. Educators
see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and
reading to learn.

By doing this, members hope to have a positive impact on education in Huntingdon County and empower children to become skillful communicators and resourceful learners. Today`s children face many challenges, and the Shavers Creek Grangers hope they are prepared to be strong, productive citizens, who can succeed and grow and solve problems in a rapidly changing world. Pottstown Rotary donates dictionaries

Recently, the Pottstown Rotary Club helped the elementary students of the Pottstown School District learn the definition of the club`s motto, `Service Above Self.`
Club members visited each of the five Pottstown elementary schools and provided more than 250 dictionaries for fourth- and fifth-graders. The dictionaries become the personal property of the students and will serve as a home resource for them while doing school assignments.
Rotary Literacy Chairman George Jackson said, `The club recognizes reading and writing as two of the most important academic skills that youngsters can acquire to ensure their future success.`

We have been encouraged by the enthusiasm of the children when they receive them, and also the teachers, who are so pleased with the variety of information in the books. The effort involved the purchase of nearly 2000 books that were donated to individual students in different parts of Philadelphia. It didn`t take Alex and his Elderton Elementary School third-grade classmates long to find it in their new dictionaries.

The nationwide third-grade Dictionary Project is continuing at the Panther Valley Elementary School in Nesquehoning, as 152 third graders received dictionaries from Francis X. Koomar and William Gardiner. This is the seventh year that the presentations have been made. He was 91 years old and he lived every day thinking of ways to improve the quality of life for the people in Lancaster County. Can dancing `the twist` help kids learn to read? That`s the hope behind The Rotary Club of the Smithfields` upcoming event `Dancing for Dictionaries,` a fund-raising night aimed at arming every third grader in the East Stroudsburg Area School District with a dictionary.

This event, a night of dinner and dancing to oldies music, marks the fourth year that the Rotary Club has raised funds to give students `the gift of words,` according to Michelle Brown, treasurer for the club and a point person for this project. LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. - Donna Strawser, Conestoga Valley`s English-as-a-second-language and foreign-language supervisor, has earned a national award for coordinating the high school`s foreign-student exchange program.
Earlier this week, Strawser received the National Shining Star Award by the Educational Resource Development Trust at Leola Elementary School.

The Educational Resource Development Trust, or ERDT/SHARE!, is an international nonprofit foundation that offers teens from around the world the opportunity to learn firsthand about the U.S. through high school exchange programs.

More than 4,861,848 children have received dictionaries thanks to the generosity of sponsors who have participated in the Dictionary Project. Sponsors provide a dictionary for the children in the community each year, so they can enjoy the benefits of a large vocabulary.
A total of 1,491,988 dictionaries were given to students in the 2005-2006 school year as a gift from people who live in their town.
This year, Rotary International president Bill Boyd asked all Rotary Clubs throughout the world to focus on literacy. He has recommended the Dictionary Project as an easy and effective program to all Rotary Clubs.

We distributed dictionaires to 3rd grade students in the following schools: Grandview Elementary School in Derry, Pa. , Derry Area School District; Bagghley Elementary School and Latrobe Elementary School, both in the Greater Latrobe School District ; Sacred Heart School and Christ the Divine School, both part of the Diocese of Greensburg that serves students from both districts.

Philadelphia Literacy Agenda On A Roll!

The 2007 literacy agenda of the Rotary Club of Philadelphia took a giant leap forward Thursday, January 11, when more than 800 dictionaries/atlases/thesauruses were awarded to individual students at the Munoz-Marin School in North Philadelphia .



These books were purchased with Philadelphia Rotary funds from The Dictionary Project and affixed with Rotary labels to become the personal possession of each child.



The ceremony, attended by a group of eight Philadelphia Rotarians, was very moving with the students singing and reciting poetry as a `thank you` for the books.

The Top-O-Pocono Rotary Club has a great idea for promoting literacy and scholarship in young people.

Recently, the Blakeslee-based club distributed more than 140 dictionaries at Tobyhanna Elementary School, giving each third-grade student a dictionary with his or her name in it.

The gifts were part of Rotary`s nationwide `Dictionary Project,` whose goal is to fight illiteracy and improve the vocabulary and general knowledge of young people.

MILTON — `Service Above Self` — that is the motto of the Milton Rotary Club and the message some of its members conveyed to third-grade students Tuesday at James F. Baugher Elementary school.

The Ressler Mill Foundation is relying on word of mouth in its campaign to get dictionaries into the hands of every third-grade student in Lancaster County .

The foundation last year distributed approximately 6,700 books to third-graders in 15 public school districts and 200 one-room school-houses, but the organization wants to do even better this year.

`We want to get the word out because we haven`t hit all the small private and parochial schools,` said Don Hostetter, a spokesman for the foundation.

Lancaster County third-graders will soon know the definition of `generosity.`

That`s because the Ressler Mill Foundation has generously ordered more than 6,000 dictionaries which it will give to third-graders who request them.
The softbound books will be distributed shortly after the start of school, said Don Hostetter, a spokesman for the foundation.

The Rotary Club of Lords Valley is the first organization in Pennsylvania to sponsor Dictionary Project, a national dictionary distribution program targeted to third grade students.



The local Rotary members started an annual dictionary distribution program in Pike schools last year. The Rotary Club of Lords Valley is thrilled to be working on the Dictionary Project for the second year. Once again, every third grade student in Pike County School Districts , Delaware Valley, Wallenpaupack and East Stroudsburg North received a personal dictionary during September. At their September 18 meeting the Pike County Commissioners issued a resolution supporting Rotary`s contribution to education by declaring the week of September 23 Dictionary Week.

50/50 Winner Donates $750 To Kids` Dictionary Fund

Dr. Leonard Seidner holds his winning $750 check from the Lords Valley Rotary 50/50 fund-raiser to purchase dictionaries for all third graders attending school in Pike County. He generously donated his win back into the Rotary fund to be used in next year`s dictionary project. Rotary President Ray Cole holds one of the Webster dictionaries that will be presented throughout the schools in September.
