Approximately 200 Highlands students recently received their own personal dictionaries courtesy of the Highlands Area Rotary Club. The Rotary Club, in conjunction with The Dictionary Project, donated to third grade students at Fairmount, Fawn, Grandview and Heights elementary schools. Rotary member Bob Sodini and the schools` principals presented the dictionaries to the third graders. Educators see third grade as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn. We have been encouraged by the enthusiasm of the children when they receive them, and also the teachers, who are so pleased with the variety of information in the books. More than 4,861,848 children have received dictionaries thanks to the generosity of sponsors who have participated in the Dictionary Project. Sponsors provide a dictionary for the children in the community each year, so they can enjoy the benefits of a large vocabulary. A total of 1,491,988 dictionaries were given to students in the 2005-2006 school year as a gift from people who live in their town. The 2007 literacy agenda of the Rotary Club of Philadelphia took a giant leap forward Thursday, January 11, when more than 800 dictionaries/atlases/thesauruses were awarded to individual students at the Munoz-Marin School in North Philadelphia .
These books were purchased with Philadelphia Rotary funds from The Dictionary Project and affixed with Rotary labels to become the personal possession of each child.
The ceremony, attended by a group of eight Philadelphia Rotarians, was very moving with the students singing and reciting poetry as a `thank you` for the books.

Recently, the Blakeslee-based club distributed more than 140 dictionaries at Tobyhanna Elementary School, giving each third-grade student a dictionary with his or her name in it.
The gifts were part of Rotary`s nationwide `Dictionary Project,` whose goal is to fight illiteracy and improve the vocabulary and general knowledge of young people.

The Ressler Mill Foundation is relying on word of mouth in its campaign to get dictionaries into the hands of every third-grade student in Lancaster County .
