Annie O. Plummer, a Savannah, Ga. Housekeeper, who died December 23, 1999, founded the Dictionary Project. She felt that if children were given a dictionary of their own, it would help stimulate their interests in learning and could change their lives.
Plummer started the project modestly when she used $50 of her own money to buy 30 pocket dictionaries in 1992 and distributed them to students walking to the school near her home. By 1995, her aim was to provide third-grade students in Savannah and surrounding Chantham County with a dictionary of their very own.
In 1997 the Dictionary Lady Foundation was incorporated in Savanna... Click to read full story ... | | | Project Dictionary For Third Graders- Dwight Wood Unit 132 American Legion Auxiliary President Sue Erickson (left) and Americanism Chairwoman Colleen Schmaltz; addres... |

The project was started by Mary French of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, who wanted every third-grader in her state to have a dictionary. There is an appendix consisting of maps, countries, The Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the U.S., the U.S. Presidents and weights and measures. It is hoped that this will be a very useful tool for th... Click to read full story ... | | | Grace and Alex page through the dictionaries they received from the American Legion Auxiliary. |
