Every day we receive a number of welcoming and encouraging comments that our sponsors send us when they are sponsoring their next project. Their words are a blessing to us; they are what keep us going and knowing that we - along with our sponsors - are making a difference.
Please send us any comments that you have to wordpower@dictionaryproject.org and we will add it to this page.
The Rotary Club of the Princeton Corridor has provided dictionaries to the 3rd grade students and teachers in the West Windsor / Plainsboro Regional School District for the past few years. It's a truly rewarding experience for all involved. Our club works with the district administation to obtain the first name of each student, and our members personalize the inside cover of each dictionary. Several club members then work together to distribute the dictionaries at four different schools throughout the district. It's amazing to see the thank you notes we receive from the students, and many of those notes proudly showcase the students' "new" vocabulary words from the dictionaries they received.
This is the 3rd year that we have been involved with this program. Many of our children have never owned a book of their own and for a child to own any book is a real treat, especially one that is so useful. Our understanding is that grades and writing skills have improved as a result of having these dictionaries. Thank you for your efforts to help America's children.
We donated 1600 dictionaries to the Elizabth School System. We want to include neighboring Hillside which does not have a Rotary Club.
The response from the students, teachers, and Board of the Elizabeth, NJ school system has been awesome. We have a large Hispanic population and these books will be a tremendous help in particular to children learning English or who don't speak English at home.
The Optimist Club of Olathe - Noon puts a new, personal dictionary in the hands of every 4th grade student in the Olathe School system; public, private and home schooled. This is our 16th year for this project. Once the dictionaries arrive, they are sorted by schools and an Optimist member or team makes personal presentations to every class room. It's a very rewarding program for us and a win-win situation for everyone involved.
We have been participating about 4 to 5 years and the teachers think it is great that we give the dictionaries to the kids.
Our first project of giving dictionaries to all the 3rd graders in the two of the school districts and two non public schools was so successful that we are branching out and giving more dictionaries to students in the third school district in our county. We are also giving dictionaries to the adult literacy program in our county. Your project is so beneficial and your website is so easy to use. The delivery of the books is very timely also. This is a great way to get books into hands of children. We are also, this time, giving books to adults who are just learning to read. Your project provides a wonderful opportunity for us to help them also.
